Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport

Fiumicino – Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (Italian: Aeroporto Internazionale Leonardo da Vinci di Fiumicino, ICAO: LIRF, IATA: FCO) is Rome’s main international airport, located in Fiumicino on the coast, approximately 22 kilometers west of the city center. It is the busiest airport in Italy, handling over 49 million passengers in 2024, and serves as a key hub for ITA Airways as well as other carriers including Vueling, easyJet, Wizz Air, and Ryanair.

The airport covers an area of about 1,570 hectares and operates three runways, with its primary runway measuring 3,902 meters in length, making it capable of accommodating aircraft of all sizes, from regional jets to long-haul widebodies. Fiumicino has multiple terminals serving domestic, European, and intercontinental flights, and it offers modern passenger facilities alongside extensive operational infrastructure.

In recent years, the airport has been recognized for its high standards of service and sustainability, receiving awards from ACI Europe. In 2025, Fiumicino inaugurated one of Europe’s largest solar farms, featuring 55,000 panels, to advance its environmental and carbon-reduction goals. Passenger traffic continues to grow steadily, with the first half of 2025 seeing over 24 million travelers, supported by expanding international routes, particularly to North America. Named after Leonardo da Vinci, the airport combines historical significance with modern infrastructure, establishing itself as a central hub for Italy’s air transport system.
