Linate Airport

Milan Linate Airport (IATA: LIN, ICAO: LIML), officially named Aeroporto Enrico Forlanini, is Milan’s secondary international airport, located just 7 km east of the city center in the municipalities of Segrate and Peschiera Borromeo. While Malpensa handles most of Milan’s long-haul and high-capacity traffic, Linate remains strategically important for short‑haul, business, and domestic flights.

In recent years, the airport has recovered strongly: in 2024, Linate served about 10.65 million passengers, up 13 % from 2023. The airport remains capacity-limited by regulation: according to its current airport regulations, only 18 scheduled commercial flights per hour are allowed, under a ministerial decree (updated from the earlier 32‑slots-per-hour technical capacity).

Linate’s infrastructure is also being modernized. A new 43-meter control tower is under construction to support future increases in air traffic and improve operational resilience. Meanwhile, ITA Airways opened a newly renovated Runway Lounge at the airport in May 2025, designed to reflect Italian style and comfort, with food, business, and relaxation zones.

On the environmental and service front, the SEA Group reports that both Linate and Malpensa saw a 37% drop in CO₂ emissions in 2023, reflecting ongoing investments in sustainability. Linate also earned high marks in passenger satisfaction: in 2023, it was ranked among the best European airports in its size category by ACI World under their Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey.

Because of its central location and slot restrictions, Linate continues to primarily serve short-haul flights within Europe, but its modern facilities, restricted yet valuable capacity, and sustainability initiatives make it a critical node in Italy’s aviation network.
