Naval Air Station Sigonella (IATA: NSY, ICAO: LICZ), also known as Aeroporto “Cosimo Di Palma” di Sigonella, is a joint U.S. Navy and Italian Air Force installation in Sicily (Italy). Although the base is technically administered by the Italian Air Force, NAS Sigonella hosts more than 40 U.S. commands and activities, making it one of the most important U.S. facilities in the Mediterranean.
Because of its strategic location roughly 15 km west and 11 km south of Catania, and about 40 km south of Mount Etna, Sigonella serves as a critical support hub for U.S. Sixth Fleet operations and NATO missions. The Italian Air Force’s 41st Anti‑Submarine Warfare Wing (41º Stormo Antisom) is based here.
NAS Sigonella is structured into multiple sites: NAS I, which includes housing, a commissary, exchange, hospital, and family support; and NAS II, the operational site focused on flight operations. The base also includes a NATO pier facility and a naval radio transmitter station in Niscemi.
The station supports a range of aircraft, including U.S. Navy P‑8 Poseidons, MQ-4C Triton UAVs, C‑130/C‑17 transport aircraft, and KC-135/KC-10 tankers. It also handles transient Italian and NATO aircraft.
NAS Sigonella plays a major role in NATO’s intelligence and surveillance architecture. It hosts the NATO Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Force (NISRF), which operates RQ-4D “Phoenix” drones. In June 2025, Brigadier General John B. Creel (USA) assumed command of NISRF — a key component of NATO’s airborne ISR capability.
The base celebrated its 65th anniversary in June 2024, underscoring its long-standing role as a strategic hub in the Mediterranean for U.S. and allied operations.
In February 2025, NAS Sigonella was placed on lockdown after a suspicious vehicle was reported at one of its entry control points. Italian bomb disposal units cleared the vehicle, found no threat, and the lockdown was lifted later that day.
Due to its close proximity to Mount Etna, Sigonella also contends with volcanic ash risk, which poses operational and health challenges for the base.
