Hydra, built amphitheatrically on a slope overlooking the Argosaronic Gulf, is a true jewel of the Saronic Islands and one of the most romantic destinations in Greece.
Traditional stone mansions, narrow cobblestone streets, quiet squares, and—above all—the complete absence of cars have helped Hydra preserve its distinctive charm through the centuries. As the only car-free island in Greece, Hydra relies on mules and donkeys for transport, giving it a unique blend of elegance and earthy simplicity.
The island flourished historically thanks to its strong naval and commercial activity, and the Hydriots played a significant role in the Greek War of Independence in 1821 with their powerful fleet. Remarkably, this small island is the birthplace of five Greek Prime Ministers. Hydra has long inspired artists, musicians, actors, and writers—including Brice Marden, Nikos Chatzikyriakos-Ghikas, Panayiotis Tetsis, Melina Mercouri, Sophia Loren, Leonard Cohen, and countless travelers drawn to its preserved architecture, scenic paths, and deep-blue waters.
Today, Hydra is also a yachting paradise. Each summer its harbor fills with sailing boats, motor yachts, and luxury cruisers. The island gained international fame with the 1957 film Boy on a Dolphin, starring Sophia Loren, filmed right here.
