Construction of the airport began in 1975 and continued through 1981. The first aircraft takeoff took place in 1978, and the airport officially opened for full civil operations in 1984.

The airport sits at an elevation of 15 meters above sea level and features a 3,002-meter (9,849-ft) runway capable of accommodating a wide range of aircraft types. Skyros Airport includes a 15,000 m² aircraft apron and a 7,500 m² passenger terminal, supporting both civilian operations and infrastructure needs.
