Kavala International Airport

Kavala International Airport “Alexander the Great” (Greek: Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Καβάλας «Μέγας Αλέξανδρος», IATA: KVA, ICAO: LGKV) is a public airport located in the Municipality of Nestos, in the regional unit of Kavala, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. The airport serves the city of Kavala, the nearby island of Thasos, and the city of Xanthi.

The original airport was established in 1952 near the village of Amygdaleonas, using Greek Air Force facilities. On 12 October 1981, operations moved to the current site near Chrysoupoli, significantly expanding the airport’s reach. In December 1987 it was officially renamed Kavala International Airport, and in January 1992 it adopted its current name Kavala International Airport “Megas Alexandros”.

At first, the airport had only a small terminal; the control tower, fire station, and other infrastructure were added in later years. A terminal extension was completed in 1992. In 1998, major upgrades began to modernize the buildings and services, creating a modern facility for both passengers and airlines.

In December 2015, the privatization deal was signed: Fraport AG / Copelouzos Group won the concession to operate this and 13 other regional Greek airports for 40 years, starting in autumn 2016.

According to its 2023 environmental bulletin, the airport occupies approximately 988 acres and operates one runway.  The runway (05/23) is 3,000 m × 45 m (about 9,851 ft), with asphalt surface.

Its operating hours vary seasonally.

Kavala Airport “Megas Alexandros” currently supports a wide range of aircraft, from small prop planes to large airliners, thanks to its international‑standard runway and infrastructure.
