Skiathos Airport “Alexandros Papadiamantis” (IATA: JSI, ICAO: LGSK) is the main airport serving the island of Skiathos in Greece. Known for its famously short and narrow runway—measuring 5,341 ft (1,628 m)—the airport can accommodate aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 757-200. Due to the island’s mountainous terrain, the airport was constructed by reclaiming land between Skiathos and the smaller island of Lazareta, effectively joining the two and creating a larger landmass suitable for aviation facilities.
The airport began operations in 1972. A new passenger terminal and control tower were added in the late 1980s to support rising traffic, and the current terminal building opened in 2002, providing increased capacity for both scheduled and seasonal passengers. Skiathos Airport has no jet bridges, so passengers walk a short distance across the apron to reach the terminal.
In 2014, the runway was extended by 110 m at its northern end, improving performance for takeoffs and landings. Additional aircraft parking stands were constructed soon after, increasing capacity from just 2–3 stands to 6–7, with the expanded apron area fully opening in 2016.
A major change in the airport’s operation came with the privatization agreement finalized in December 2015, under which Skiathos Airport—along with 13 other regional airports in Greece—was transferred to the Fraport AG/Copelouzos Group joint venture. The consortium began managing the airport for a 40-year concession period starting in the autumn of 2016, ushering in modernization projects and operational upgrades.
Today, Skiathos Airport is known worldwide for its dramatic, low-altitude aircraft approaches and departures, making it popular with aviation enthusiasts. The airport supports small propeller aircraft, small jets, and regional airliners, serving both domestic connections and seasonal international flights during the summer tourism season.
