Sitia Airport

Sitia Airport (IATA: JSH, ICAO: LGST) is a regional airport located in the municipality of Sitia on the eastern coast of Crete, Greece, about 1 km north‑northwest of Sitia’s town center. Originally opened on 7 June 1984, its first operational flight was an Olympic Airways Dornier Do-228. The airport was formally inaugurated on 9 June 1984, and shortly thereafter began receiving flights from Rhodes and Karpathos.

Over the years, Sitia Airport has been expanded and modernized: in 1993 it moved to a new terminal building and control tower of 550 m², and in 2003 a longer runway (05/23) of 2,074 m was completed, together with additional taxiways and aircraft stands. A major upgrade was completed on 13 January 2016, when operations moved into a new 7,500 m² terminal.

In 2024, Sitia Airport saw especially strong growth in domestic traffic: in May 2024, arrivals on internal (domestic) flights more than doubled (up 101%) compared to May 2023. This growth reflects a broader trend: according to the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (ΥΠΑ), passenger traffic increased by 8.1% across the 24 state-managed airports in the first eleven months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

Sitia Airport is managed under the network of state‑run airports, and its continued growth is tied to Crete’s tourism demand, particularly for its eastern region.
