Zürich Airport (German: Flughafen Zürich, IATA: ZRH, ICAO: LSZH), also known as Kloten Airport, is Switzerland’s largest international airport and the main hub of Swiss International Air Lines. It lies 13 km north of central Zürich and serves much of the country through extensive road and rail links.
Zürich Airport originated after Switzerland’s 1945 decision to build a major new airfield near Kloten, replacing earlier aviation activities at Dubendorf. Construction began in 1946, and the airport has expanded steadily since. A major modernisation phase is underway, including the full reconstruction of Terminal 1 and upgrades to airfield infrastructure.
The airport handled about 31.2 million passengers in 2024, nearing full recovery to pre-pandemic levels, with 261,103 aircraft movements and over 436,000 tonnes of cargo. Traffic continued to grow in 2025, with a record 14.96 million passengers in the first half of the year. As of mid-2025, 63 airlines operate at Zürich Airport, serving over 200 global destinations.
The airport’s runways measure 3,700 m, 3,300 m and 2,500 m. With a maximum runway length of 12,139 ft, Zürich Airport accommodates small props, small jets, medium jets, long-range jets, regional airliners and large airliners.
