Gstaad Airport (IATA: ZGG, ICAO: LSGK), also known as Saanen Airport, is a small alpine aerodrome located about 2.8 km northwest of Gstaad in Switzerland. The airport originally began as a grass strip in the late 1930s and was upgraded during World War II to support both military and civil operations. After the war, it gradually transitioned to general aviation, supporting private and charter flights, scenic tours, and helicopter operations.
The airport features a single asphalt runway (08/26) measuring 1,400 meters (4,593 feet) in length and sits at an elevation of 1,008 meters above sea level. Due to its high-altitude location and surrounding mountainous terrain, all operations are conducted under visual flight rules (VFR), with daylight-only restrictions and no instrument landing systems.
Gstaad Airport primarily serves private jets, turboprops, and small aircraft, with peak activity during the winter ski season. The airport also hosts rescue services, including the Air-Glaciers helicopter base, and provides essential facilities for general aviation and tourism traffic.
Recent renovations, completed in 2018, modernized the runway, taxiways, aprons, and hangars, improving safety and infrastructure while solidifying its role as a key gateway for VIP and tourist travel to the Gstaad and Bernese Oberland regions.
