Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (IATA: FLL, ICAO: KFLL, FAA LID: FLL) is a major airport located in Broward County, Florida, near the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Dania Beach, approximately 3 miles southwest of downtown Fort Lauderdale and 21 miles north of Miami. The airport serves as a primary gateway to the Caribbean and South Florida, offering easy access to the cruise terminals at Port Everglades.
The airport originally opened as Merle Fogg Airport on May 1, 1929. During World War II, it was taken over by the United States Navy and became Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale, serving as a training base for naval aviators and aircrew flying Grumman TBF and TBM Avengers. After the war, it returned to civilian use and was developed into the commercial airport known today.
FLL has two asphalt runways: 10L/28R, which is 9,000 ft long, and 10R/28L, which is 8,000 ft long. The airport accommodates small props, small and medium jets, long-range jets, regional airliners, and large airliners. It provides full commercial services as well as general aviation, charter operations, business aviation, and support for private jet traffic.
The airport has a 24-hour air traffic control tower, multiple FBOs, customs and border protection, and modern passenger facilities. In 2025, FLL is expected to handle approximately 36 million passengers, showing modest growth compared to previous years. The airport continues to invest in terminal upgrades, additional taxiways, and expanded FBO services to support general and business aviation.
Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport remains one of South Florida’s busiest airports and a key hub for both commercial and private air traffic.
