Sheremetyevo International Airport

Sheremetyevo International Airport (Russian: Международный аэропорт Шереметьево, IATA: SVO, ICAO: UUEE) is located in Khimki, Moscow Oblast, about 29 km (18 mi) northwest of central Moscow. It is the primary hub for Aeroflot and one of the three major airports serving Moscow (along with Domodedovo and Vnukovo).

The airport was originally built as a military object called Sheremetyevsky (Russian: Шереметьевский) named after a settlement with the same name. The decree about the construction of the Central Airdrome of the Air Force near the settlement of Chashnikovo (Russian: Чашниково) on the outskirts of Moscow was issued on September 1, 1953 by the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union. The airport became operational on October 7, 1957 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the October Revolution.

Sheremetyevo handled 43.7 million passengers in 2024, according to recent data, showing a strong recovery from previous years. The airport’s terminal capacity is estimated to be around 85 million passengers per year, though current traffic remains below that level.

The airport operates three parallel runways, measured as follows: 3,550 m × 60 m; 3,700 m × 60 m; and 3,200 m × 60 m. Runway‑1 was fully reconstructed (with new high-speed exit taxiways), increasing the airport’s long‑term capacity. However, as of 2025, Runway 3 remains temporarily closed, with no immediate plans to reopen it.

Sheremetyevo consists of a northern terminal complex (Terminals B and C) and a southern complex. In March 2025, the airport suspended passenger service at Terminal D, transferring operations to Terminals B and C, to optimize operations under current traffic conditions. There are also terminal‑expansion plans: a new Terminal C2 (capacity ~15 million passengers/year) is planned to begin construction by 2026 as part of a long-term strategy to expand capacity up to 100 million passengers/year.

On the northern side, a major redevelopment is underway: Terminal B is being replaced with a modern facility of ~114,000 m², featuring 19 boarding bridges, an automated baggage system, three business lounges, a VIP area, and a 2,500‑space parking structure.

While Sheremetyevo once planned to restore its third runway (Runway 3) and Terminal F, management has stated that due to current traffic levels, there is no immediate need to reopen or complete them
