Courchevel Altiport

Courchevel Altiport (IATA: CVF, ICAO: LFLJ) serves the Courchevel ski resort high in the French Alps. The airfield sits at an altitude of 2,008 m (6,588 ft). Its single runway (04/22) is extremely short — only 537 m (1,762 ft) long — and slopes uphill with an 18.6% gradient. Because of the steep terrain and the surrounding mountains, there is no go-around procedure for landings.

Due to the lack of runway lighting and no instrument‑approach system, Courchevel only operates under daytime VFR (visual flight rules). The altiport is restricted-use, and only pilots with a “mountain wheel” certification (or who have passed a specific test) are allowed to land there.

The altiport is mainly used by small fixed-wing aircraft such as Pilatus PC‑12 or Cessna 208 Caravan, and by helicopters, especially during the winter when helicopter traffic accounts for a large share of movements. Over the winter season, there are around 5,400 aircraft movements, about 70% of which are helicopter flights.

Because of its proximity to other airports, the most practical way for many travelers to reach Courchevel is to fly into Chambéry, Geneva, Lyon, or Grenoble, all of which support private jets.  Once at one of those airports, many people opt for a private helicopter transfer directly into Courchevel’s altiport.

Courchevel is a prestigious mountain resort with a massive ski area, luxury hotels, and Michelin-starred restaurants — arriving by air (fixed-wing or helicopter) adds to the exclusivity. However, because the runway is so short and the conditions so challenging, only highly skilled and specially certified pilots fly in.

Courchevel History

The original idea of Courchevel as a resort was conceived during the Second World War when in 1942, the French Commission of Tourism expressed and interest in creating a super ski resort. Their criteria included terrain between 1400 and 1800 meters and the feasibility of installing a reliable lift system to link them together and create an enormous cohesive ski area. At this time Courchevel, Saint Bon and Moriond were seeking funding for regeneration and development and so Courchevel became France’s first purpose built ski resort.

Courchevel Ski Facts

Courchevel spans four levels: Le Praz (1,300 m), Courchevel Village (1,550 m), Moriond (1,650 m), and the iconic Courchevel 1850. It is part of Les Trois Vallées, which boasts about 600 km of pistes. Within Courchevel itself there are around 102 marked runs: approximately 21 green, 39 blue, 38 red, and 11 black.

In terms of lift infrastructure, Courchevel has 1 cable‑car, 10 gondolas, about 20 chairlifts, 29 drag lifts, and 3 magic carpets. The broader Trois Vallées system has about 180 ski lifts in total.

On the non-skiing side, Courchevel offers a variety of winter activities, including ice skating, tobogganing, hot-air ballooning, pleasure flights, and ice climbing, maintaining its reputation as a premium alpine destination.
