Chambéry Airport

Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport (IATA: CMF, ICAO: LFLB), also known as Chambéry Aix-les-Bains Airport, is a regional airport in Viviers-du-Lac, 6 km from Chambéry in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. Located beside Lake Bourget and surrounded by Alpine terrain, it serves as a key winter gateway to major ski destinations including Courchevel, Méribel, Chamonix, and Val d’Isère.

The airport has become an important hub for seasonal business and general aviation, with significant private jet and charter activity during winter months. While its mountainous surroundings impose some operational limitations for larger aircraft, it remains well-suited for small props, light and midsize jets, and regional aircraft.

Chambéry Airport features a dedicated private jet terminal offering VIP lounges, concierge services, limousine transfers, and helicopter connections directly to ski resorts for rapid access. Recent upgrades have focused on improving safety systems and enhancing service efficiency.

The airport’s main runway is 2,020 metres (6,627 feet) long, supporting a wide range of general aviation aircraft and ensuring reliable operations throughout the winter season

CHAMBERY AIRPORT HISTORY

Chambéry – Savoie Mont Blanc Airport was originally developed in 1934 as a mixed military‑civil aerodrome. It entered commercial service in 1960, and by the late 1960s regular passenger routes had begun to take shape.

From 1964 until July 2004, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Savoie managed the airport, investing in its infrastructure, especially ahead of the 1992 Winter Olympics.

In July 2004, control passed to VINCI Airports (in partnership with Keolis), under a public‑service delegation. This concession was renewed in 2013 and will last until 2029. Since then, VINCI has driven further modernization: in 2016, both terminals were renovated, and in 2019 modifications were made in preparation for post‑Brexit border control procedures. In 2023, the airport revamped its customs areas and introduced a walk‑through duty‑free store to improve the passenger experience.

On the environmental front, Chambéry has made significant strides. It installed LED lighting across the site and water-saving systems. The airport first earned ISO 14001 environmental certification in 2019 (renewed in 2022), and in 2022 it achieved Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) under the ACI’s carbon‑management program — a recognition of its ongoing emissions reduction efforts.

Thanks to the 2006 business‑aviation terminal (opened under VINCI), private and VIP air traffic has become a major part of the airport’s operations. During the 2022–2023 season nearly 169,000 passengers passed through Chambéry, including regular scheduled flights, ski charter services, and business aviation. In winter, the airport ranks as the third busiest in France for business aviation, underlining its strategic role as a gateway to the Alpine ski resorts.

Chambery Town

Located at the junction of two major Alpine valleys, the chateau town of Chambéry is an unjustly neglected gem. 12 km south of twinkling Lac du Bourget, it’s within easy reach of two regional parks and preserves many signs of former glory (Chambery was Savoy’s capital from the 13th century until 1563, when the Dukes relocated to Turin). Its surprisingly few visitors are rewarded with crowd-free museums, lively cafes and serene strolls along old streets. In the winter season Chambery becomes the main private aviation airport in France. Hundreds of ski lovers take advantage of  helicopter transfers to ski resorts like Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens, or Tignes and Val d’Isère, from the Chambéry private airfield. The helicopter transfers take just a few minutes, where as by car you would spend a few hours in traffic, especially during school holidays.
