Vienna International Airport (German: Flughafen Wien–Schwechat, IATA: VIE, ICAO: LOWW) is the main airport for Vienna, Austria, located in Schwechat, approximately 18 km southeast of the city center and about 57 km west of Bratislava. It is Austria’s largest airport and serves as a hub for Austrian Airlines, while also being a base for Eurowings and various other carriers. The airport handles a mix of European and long-haul destinations, connecting Vienna to Asia, North America, and Africa.
In 2024, the airport reached a record passenger total of 31.72 million, surpassing pre-COVID levels. In the first quarter of 2025 (January–March), it handled 6.08 million passengers, a 1.8% increase year-over-year, with 48,603 aircraft movements (+5.0 %). For the first half of 2025, the airport reported 14.74 million passengers, 112,956 movements, and air-cargo volume of 154,001 tonnes (+9.1% vs. H1/2024).
Originally built in 1938 as a military airfield, Schwechat was used in WWII as a production facility by Heinkel. After the war, the British took control and it became RAF Schwechat. The civilian airline company was founded in 1954, and by 1959 a 3,000 m runway and a new terminal building were in place. A second runway was added in 1972, the arrivals hall was expanded in 1986, and in 1988 “Pier East” with 8 jet bridges was opened.
Today, Vienna Airport has two runways: 16/34, measuring 3,600 m (11,811 ft), and 11/29, 3,500 m (11,483 ft). The runway system supports a high capacity, with 68 flight movements per hour coordinated under its layout.
The airport is capable of accommodating all types of aircraft, from small prop planes and regional jets to large long-haul airliners. In 2024, 72 airlines operated scheduled flights to 195 destinations in 65 countries.
