Munich Airport (IATA: MUC, ICAO: EDDM), officially Flughafen München “Franz Josef Strauß”, is a major international airport located about 28.5 km northeast of Munich. It serves as a key hub for Lufthansa (including Lufthansa Regional) and Star Alliance partners, and is the second‑busiest airport in Germany after Frankfurt.
In 2024, the airport handled approximately 41.6 million passengers, a growth of 12.2% over the previous year, making it the fastest‑growing airport in Germany. Aircraft movements also rose by about 8% to over 327,000 takeoffs and landings, and the average load factor reached a record-high 82%. Cargo operations saw a strong rebound too, with approximately 311,000 tonnes of freight handled in 2024.
Munich Airport continues to operate with its two passenger terminals and a midfield terminal. It is fully equipped to accommodate wide-body aircraft, including the Airbus A380, and has extensive maintenance and cargo facilities. The airport now connects to 224 destinations in 66 countries.
Financially, the Munich Airport Group posted a net profit of €64 million for 2024, largely driven by the rise in passenger traffic and flight operations. Total revenues also reached a new high of €1.62 billion.
Sustainability efforts are underway: in 2024, Munich Airport reported a reduction of 3,047 tonnes of CO₂ emissions—surpassing its environmental targets—and continued improving passenger satisfaction through process optimization.
