Palma de Mallorca Airport

Palma de Mallorca Airport (Catalan: Aeroport de Palma de Mallorca, Spanish: Aeropuerto de Palma de Mallorca; IATA: PMI, ICAO: LEPA), also commonly known as Son Sant Joan Airport, lies about 8 km (5 mi) east of Palma de Mallorca, near the village of Can Pastilla. It is the third-busiest airport in Spain after Madrid‑Barajas and Barcelona‑El Prat, especially during the summer when it becomes one of Europe’s most active airports.

In 2024, the airport reached a record high of 33,298,164 passengers, marking a 7% increase over 2023. That same year, it handled 243,201 aircraft operations and around 6,758 tonnes of cargo. The airport has also received notable recognition: it was named “Best Airport in Europe” in the 25–40 million passenger category by ACI in 2024.

PMI’s annual traffic is now primarily international, with nearly 24.23 million international passengers in 2024, while domestic traffic reached 9.06 million. The airport is a major gateway for tourism on Mallorca, especially in the summer months.

Infrastructure‑wise, Palma de Mallorca Airport spans about 6.3 km² and operates a single terminal complex divided into four modules (A, B, C, and D). It has two runways: one of 3,270 m (06L/24R) and another of 3,000 m (06R/24L), making it capable of handling a wide range of aircraft—from small airliners to large long‑haul jets.

Historically, its roots date back to the 1920s, when seaplanes carried mail among the Balearic Islands; by the 1930s, a land aerodrome was established, and during the Spanish Civil War the airport also served military functions. Over time it evolved into a modern commercial hub.

Today, its main airline connections include Ryanair, EasyJet, Vueling, and Air Europa, reflecting its importance as both a tourist gateway and a point of connection to the Spanish mainland.
