Agion Oros, also known as Mount Athos, is one of the world’s most important Orthodox spiritual centers and an autonomous monastic state located on a peninsula east of Thessaloniki. Often called “the Holy Mountain,” it is largely cut off from the outside world and can only be accessed in limited ways, with air travel being the only option for some visitors. Women and children are strictly prohibited from entering the territory.
Mount Athos is home to twenty monasteries, housing around 1,700 monks. While most monasteries are Greek, there are also Russian, Bulgarian, and Serbian establishments. Beyond its religious significance, the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving priceless icons, religious heirlooms, and paintings that reflect centuries of Orthodox art and culture.
The mountain and the surrounding peninsula remain largely undeveloped, apart from the monastic centers, making it a striking natural landscape. Viewed from above, Mount Athos offers a spectacular and unique combination of spiritual heritage, artistic treasures, and untouched scenery.
