Tunis–Carthage International Airport

Tunis–Carthage International Airport (French: Aéroport de Tunis‑Carthage, Arabic: مطار تونس قرطاج الدولي; IATA: TUN, ICAO: DTTA) is the main airport serving Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. It is located just east of the city, close to the historic site of Carthage, and is a hub for Tunisair, Tunisair Express, Nouvelair, and Tunisavia.

Its origins date back to a seaplane base on Lake Tunis in the 1920s, and the first land-based airfield opened in 1938. During World War II, the airport was used by the United States Air Force, and after the war it grew steadily under civil use. In more recent decades, terminal expansions have taken place, including a charter‑flight terminal introduced in 2006.

As of 2024, the airport handled more than 7.24 million passengers, and flight movements rose to over 79,000 — clear evidence that traffic continues to recover and grow strongly.

To meet this rising demand, Tunisia is now undertaking an ambitious expansion of the airport. A new terminal covering approximately 80,000 m² is planned, with an expected capacity of 8 million passengers per year, which would lift the total airport capacity to around 13 million passengers annually.

The expansion plan also includes major infrastructure works: a second control tower, the widening or replacement of the airport viaduct, and a suspended (elevated) metro line to link Tunis‑Carthage Airport directly with central Tunis.

Financially, the project is estimated at around 3,000 million Tunisian dinars (≈ $1 billion), according to the Transport Minister. The goal is to almost double current capacity, by raising it to 18 million passengers per year.

While environmental or “green” sustainability specifics are less frequently mentioned in public sources, the scale and ambition of the project suggest that modern technologies and infrastructure will likely be part of the design, particularly given the broader push in Tunisia for “smart infrastructure.”
