Sion Airport (IATA: SIR, ICAO: LSGS) is located about 2.5 km southwest of Sion, in the Rhône Valley of Switzerland. At an elevation of 1,582 ft (≈ 483 m) above sea level, the airport operates both civilian and military flights.
The airport has two runways: the primary one (07/25) is 2,000 m long and surfaced with asphalt, while a secondary grass runway (also 07/25) is 560 m in length. Sion Airport supports both IFR and VFR operations.
Sion is known for its general-aviation and charter activity, particularly serving ski resorts in the surrounding Alps like Crans-Montana, Zermatt, Verbier, Saas‑Fee, and others. It also offers leisure flight services: gliding, parachuting, helicopter transfers, and scenic flights are available.
In a more sustainable move, Sion Airport has begun distributing SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) made from vegetable oils and animal fats.
On the regulatory side, Sion Airport has updated its noise and operational safety documents: in 2024, the Swiss aviation authority approved changes related to fuel station layout and runway markings.
Pilot qualification is required for IFR operations: Sion maintains a pilot‑type qualification (“Qualification A”) for certain instrument approaches, which involves specific training and check flights.
