Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport

Rio de Janeiro–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (IATA: GIG, ICAO: SBGL), commonly known as Galeão International Airport, is the principal international airport serving Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Renamed in honor of the famed Brazilian musician Antonio Carlos Jobim on January 5, 1999, the airport originally took its name from Praia do Galeão (Galleon Beach), site of the historic shipyard where the galleon Padre Eterno was built in 1663. It remains one of the most important airports in Brazil, both for passenger and cargo traffic.

Since August 12, 2014, the airport has been managed by the RIOgaleão consortium, composed of Odebrecht, Changi Airport Group, and a minority stake from Infraero, the state-owned company that previously operated the airport. Some of its facilities are shared with Galeão Air Force Base, highlighting its joint civil-military role.

GIG has two runways: Runway 10/28 is 4,000 meters (13,123 ft) long with a concrete surface, and Runway 15/33 is 3,180 meters (10,433 ft) with an asphalt surface. The airport operates 24 hours a day.

In terms of passenger traffic, GIG saw 14,491,987 passengers in 2024, a dramatic increase over previous years, and serving 52 direct destinations (27 domestic and 25 international). Its capacity is officially quoted at up to 40 million passengers per year under its current infrastructure.

Cargo operations reached a new high in 2024, when 59,700 tonnes were transported through the airport.

GIG has two terminals: Terminal 1 (largely closed for commercial operations since 2016) and Terminal 2, which now serves most commercial passenger flights. The airport’s design and runway capability allow it to handle large, long-haul aircraft, making it suitable for a wide range of aviation operations.
