Princess Juliana International Airport (IATA: SXM, ICAO: TNCM) is the main airport on the Dutch side of the Caribbean island of Saint Martin (Sint Maarten), located right beside one of its most famous beaches. It serves as a hub for Winair and is a key gateway to nearby Leeward Islands such as Anguilla, Saba, Saint Barthélemy, and Saint Eustatius. The airport is named after Princess Juliana of the Netherlands, who visited in 1944, one year after the airport first opened.
What makes Juliana Airport particularly dramatic — and iconic — is its runway, which begins very close to Maho Beach, so aircraft land and take off just above beachgoers, often producing powerful jet-blast. Right beyond the runway end is the famous “Sunset Bar,” a favorite spot for plane spotters.
The airport has a single runway — Runway 10/28 — which is 2,300 meters (7,546 ft) long and 45 meters (148 ft) wide, surfaced with asphalt/concrete. Its official elevation is just 14 ft (4 m) above sea level.
In recent years, Princess Juliana Airport has undergone significant renovations, particularly following the damage from Hurricane Irma. As of 2023–2024, a major terminal rebuilding project restored and upgraded the facility: a new or expanded departure hall and a temporary arrivals facility were commissioned, aiming to restore pre‑Irma passenger capacity of around 2.5 million per year. The terminal now spans four air-conditioned levels, covering about 30,500 m²
