Mexico City International Airport (IATA: MEX, ICAO: MMMX), officially Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez, is the primary international gateway for Greater Mexico City and remains one of the busiest airports in Latin America. In 2024, the airport handled 45,359,485 passengers, reaffirming its role as a major hub despite growing competition from newer regional airports.
The airport sits at an elevation of 7,316 ft (2,231 m), making it a “hot and high” facility, which adds complexity to aircraft performance. It is owned by Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de México and operated by Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA), the Mexican government-owned corporation that runs several major airports nationwide.
MMMX has two parallel asphalt runways: Runway 05R/23L is about 3,900 m (12,795 ft) long, while Runway 05L/23R measures approximately 3,952 m (12,966 ft). These runways support a wide range of aircraft types, from regional airliners to heavy long-range jets.
As a hub, the airport is extremely well connected: it is the main base for AeroMexico and AeroMexico Connect, and serves as an important operational point for Volaris, Interjet, and VivaAerobus. According to recent data, on a typical day more than 120,000 passengers pass through the airport traveling to and from more than 100 destinations.
Cargo is also a significant part of MEX’s operations: in 2024, the airport handled around 240,035 tonnes of freight, making it one of the leading cargo airports in Mexico. Despite cargo traffic growing elsewhere in the Mexico City area, Benito Juárez Airport remains strategically important for both passenger and freight services.
In response to capacity constraints and environmental concerns, authorities have imposed limits on runway operations: the airport is restricted to a maximum of 43 operations per hour, down from a previously higher cap. These measures reflect the challenges of managing high traffic volumes in a dense urban environment.
