Marrakesh Menara Airport

Marrakesh Menara Airport (Berber: ⴰⵣⴰⴱⵯⵣ ⵎⵕⵕⴰⴽⵛ ⵎⵉⵏⴰⵕⴰ; French: Aéroport Marrakech-Ménara; Arabic: مطار مراكش المنارة; IATA: RAK, ICAO: GMMX) is the main international airport serving Marrakesh, the capital of the Marrakesh–Safi region in Morocco. It connects the city with numerous European destinations, as well as routes from Casablanca and several Arab nations, making it a vital gateway for tourism and regional travel. During World War II, the airport served as an important transit point for the United States Army Air Forces Air Transport Command along the Cairo–Dakar route, supporting the movement of aircraft, personnel, and cargo.

Today, Marrakesh Menara Airport operates two passenger terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, which function as a single integrated facility. A third terminal has been planned and developed to support ongoing growth. The combined terminal area covers approximately 42,000 square meters and is designed for a capacity of up to nine million passengers annually, with further expansion planned under Morocco’s “Airports 2030” strategy. This national initiative aims to significantly increase Menara’s capacity to around sixteen million passengers through major upgrades and a future terminal expansion to over 140,000 square meters. The airport also includes a dedicated freight terminal and offers ONDA’s premium “Salon Convives de Marque” VIP service.

Menara Airport has a single 3,100-meter runway capable of accommodating modern jet aircraft, supported by apron space sufficient for both narrow-body and wide-body operations. In recent years, Marrakesh Menara has experienced strong passenger growth. By 2024 it handled approximately 9.3 million passengers, marking a substantial increase from previous years and reinforcing its position as one of Morocco’s busiest and most strategically important airports. As Marrakesh continues to rise as a global tourist destination, ongoing investments aim to ease congestion, enhance the travel experience, and prepare the airport for the surging demand expected throughout the decade.
