Kaprun Ski Resort
This was originally a mining village and finds in the area date back to the time of the Celts. Nowadays it has a population of around 3,000, based mainly around tourism and the massive hydro-electric power plant in the mountains above the village.
The Kitzsteinhorn glacier skiing area was the first major project of its kind in Austria and boasts the highest cable car pylon in the world (according to the lift company) at 113 metres.
As the nearest village to a glacier ski area, the ski season starts earlier than in neighbouring Zell am See and the hotels will start filling up with guests in the late autumn, especially on November weekends.
The area in winter is principally known for the skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn, which attracts many Austrians, Germans and eastern Europeans with the snow-sure conditions. However, the Maiskogel hill just outside the town and the small draglifts closer to the accommodation add to the slopes on offer.
