MYKONOS AIRPORT HISTORY

Mykonos Island National Airport  (IATA: JMK,ICAO: LGMK) began its operations in the year 1971 in the month of June. The airport features a 1900 meters runway and is elevated at 405 ft above the sea level. In the early 1960’s when the town of 米克诺斯 became the center of the hippie movement, the airport’s importance increased. In search of peace and tranquility thousands of tourists flood here to the beautiful locale. When the authorities realized this they decided that the destination could be made profitable and they immediately decided to put extensive investments to modernize the airport. This helped the town of 米克诺斯 to become a very major money earner for the government with thousands of tourists landing every day to experience the rich historical traditions of the town.

Mykonos Airport Upgrade works

As part of its mandate for taking over management and operations at the 14 airports, Fraport Greece has prepared a comprehensive plan for the modernization and development of the airports. The company’s plan includes immediate projects and development works for upgrading the airports’ facilities, which will contribute significantly to improving the overall customer travel experience, while responding to the expected increase in passenger traffic. Fraport Greece will invest a minimum of 400 million euros for development works until 2021. During the 40-year concession period the company will implement additional maintenance and upgrading works, as well as capacity expansions (dependent on traffic growth) — resulting in possible total investments of some 1 billion euros.

• Expanding and remodeling the terminal – 50 percent increase in the total size of the terminal at 13,350 m2, with the construction of a new terminal area
• New fire station
• Reorganizing apron
• 33 percent increase in the number of check-in counters (from 12 to 16)
• 17 percent increase in the number of departure gates (from 6 to 7)
• 25 percent increase in the number of security-check lanes (from 4 to 5)
