Did you know that more than 90.000 Private jet movements are performed in London every year? That makes London one of the busiest cities for private jet charter. Let’s see which London’s Airport is the most suitable for Private jets.
London’s busiest private jet spot
Also, Luton Airport has been Europe’s and Uk’s top private jet airport last couple of years. Better known as a budget airline hub.
London Luton Airport offers a choice of private jet FBOs and cost-effective landing fees. Trip to London by train will be around 25 minutes (1 hour by car)
Due to the airport’s growing number of airline flights, it’s popularity has started to decline in recent years, with runway availability to private jet customers becoming an issue. And while it is usually open 24-hours, during the peak summer months of June – September night time flights are banned in the summer.
The Biggin Hill Airport (a former RAF military base), offers aviation heritage for private jet users looking to access the south side of London. It also offers cost-effective landing fees and quiet flexible airport slots. Biggin Hill is DEFRA approved to accept entry with pets. The airport open hours are from 06:30 to 23:00LT and undergoing a £15M investment program.
The Biggin Hill airport offers helicopter shuttles to central London for those who are in a hurry. Its location is not ideal for everyone, due to its slower road links to London.
London City Airport is situated less than 10 minutes by car from Central London, nearby Canary Wharf, and also offers the fastest departure and highly-efficient VIP customer service.
In the last few years, London City Airport has dropped its landing fees for business and private aviation, making it more competitive. And an increasing number of larger aircraft are now able to land on its steeply-approached runway.
But the cost still remains higher than in other London airports. So to use Luton, Farnborough, or Biggin Hill will be cheaper.
Riyal Military airport that also accepts private jets
As its military usage is reducing, RAF Northolt Airport is also accepting private jets. The distance to Central London is 21 km (13 miles), and it offers a 30 minute transfer time into the city center. A long resurfaced in 2019 runway is now capable of handling all sizes of aircraft: and exceptional security and privacy – which makes it popular with VIP and government flights.
However opening hours are 08.00 – 16.00 and slot availability is limited, so many customers do not find it a convenient option.
After the Airport was bought by the Eddie Stobart Group in 2012, it then underwent a much-needed upgrade, opening a new Jet Centre in 2017. With low landing fees and good 24-hour availability, the Southend airport is popular with customers in Essex and can offer fast ground (and even helicopter) transfer times into East London.
Most underused airport?
London Stansted Airport offers 24-hour access, good transport links, and excellent FBO facilities. But it is less popular than it should be for Private jet users – maybe because it is perceived as being further from London. But the fact is that is quite the same distance away from the center as Luton Airport.
This Airport is a popular choice for large private jets, like the BBJ, but for many others, it remains under the radar. It is DEFRA approved, so it is also a good choice for those flying with pets.
One more choice for West London
London Oxford Airport is farther from the city center than other London’s airports, but its proximity to the M40 motorway means it can rival them for driving times if you are heading to or from West London. Oxford airport is mostly focussed on the business aviation and offers an efficient service and dedicated terminal.
Not the best choice for private jet flights
London Heathrow airport is the busiest airport for commercial flights – but not recommended for private jets. It is heavily congested and landing fees are high.
Even for private jet users going through Heathrow’s dedicated private jet terminal (FBO), operated by Signature Flight Support, delays are often experienced in the air and on the ground, getting in or out of the airport.
North London VIP option
Famous for its flight school, London Cranfield Airport also accept private jet flights. It a VIP choice for travelers looking to access the North of London, and is particularly popular during the Silverstone Grand Prix.
Its runway can accommodate all sizes of a private jet and, with no runway slots and airside access for cars, it offers flexibility and high levels of privacy.
Cost-effective private jet airport for short flights.
With a fleet of Cessna Mustangs based at London Blackbushe in Surrey, the airfield serves as a convenient and cost-effective airfield for small jets – such as 4 passengers looking for a short European flight.
If we steep in aviation history, Blackbushe was an important RAF base and served as a VIP entry point for London.
In our days, it provides a very fast, efficient, and cost-effective services for private jets, with the same driving time as Farnborough.
Nestled in the Surrey countryside, and with a number of small prop aircraft based there, London Fairoaks provides the perfect airfield for a short weekend hop for Surrey-based travelers.
Operations on larger aircraft and jets are limited by the short runway. However, it is also the perfect location to depart or arrive by helicopter for the many local polo clubs.
It also offers a very rapid departure time.
