Innsbruck
The capital city of western Austria’s Tyrol region, Innsbruck is renowned as a centre for winter sports, having hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics, the 1984 and 1988 Winter Paralympics, and the first Youth Winter Olympics in 2012.
A popular place to fly into for access to surrounding ski areas, there are in fact several smaller resorts accessible directly from the city, or a short drive away on the free ski bus. The Olympia SkiWorld pass gives access nine local resorts with over 300 kilometres of varied piste.
Piece together your own ski safari by choosing from the stunning city views in Nordkette-Seegrube, Olympic mountain Patscherkofel, intermediate haven Axamer Lizum, perfect for beginners Muttereralm, family-friendly Rangger Köpfl, Glungezer – home to the longest run in Tyrol – freerider favourite Schlick 2000, the year-round Stubai Glacier, or Kühtai, Austria’s highest ski resort.
If the weather’s not right for a day on the slopes, there’s always the Olympic bobsleigh track at Patscherkofel to have a go on, miles and miles of cross-country skiing tracks and pleasant wooded walks, or ice skating to try.
