Geneva Airport, Switzerland

Geneva Airport (IATA: GVA, ICAO: LSGG), also known as Genève Aéroport, is a major international airport located about 7 km (4.3 miles) northwest of Geneva’s city center. It is Switzerland’s second-busiest airport, after Zurich, and serves a broad network of domestic, European, Middle Eastern, and North American routes.

The airport originally opened in 1919, and commercial passenger traffic began in the 1930s. It has two main passenger terminals: Terminal 1, which is subdivided into Piers A, B, C, D, and F (the last serving flights to/from France), and Terminal 2, which is used for seasonal charter services in winter.

Geneva Airport has a primary runway, 04/22, which is 3,900 m (12,795 ft) long and made of concrete. This runway supports a broad mix of aircraft, from regional and medium jets to long-range widebodies.

In 2024, the airport handled 17.8 million passengers, nearly matching its pre-COVID levels, with 179,106 aircraft movements and cargo volume of 92,621 tonnes. For summer 2025, Geneva Airport expects passenger traffic of around 1.68 million in July and 1.65 million in August, and airlines are operating services to 125 destinations via 48 carriers, including new routes to Shanghai, Riyadh, Beijing, and Bahrain.

Financially, the airport posted a turnover of CHF 533.7 million in 2024, with a net profit of CHF 110.4 million, reflecting a strong recovery and efficient cost management. To curb noise, Geneva introduced a “dissuasion system” for late-night takeoffs: as of January 2025, airlines pay surcharges for flights after 22:00 — a measure that has already lowered post-10 pm departures by 36%.

As for its route network, the airport maintained 146 destinations in 2024 (slightly down from 148 in 2023). EasyJet is the dominant carrier (≈ 46.9% market share), followed by SWISS (≈ 12.4%).

Geneva Airport also has a strong sustainability strategy: it aims to reach net-zero for its own operations by 2037 (scopes 1 and 2), and works with partners to contribute toward net-zero by 2050 for broader aviation emissions (scope 3).
