Alexandria International Airport (IATA: HBE, ICAO: HEAX) — formerly known as Borg El Arab International Airport — is the main airport serving Alexandria, Egypt, and the Nile Delta region.
The airport lies about 40 km southwest of Alexandria, in Borg El Arab. In a major rebranding, it was officially renamed Alexandria International Airport on 4 September 2025, with its ICAO code changing from HEBA to HEAX.
Terminal 1 covers 24,000 m² and supports up to 1.2 million passengers per year. Terminal 2, inaugurated more recently, spans 40,000 m² and is designed with environmental features like solar power, energy-efficient lighting, and noise-reducing materials. According to the Prime Minister’s office, the airport’s capacity after the expansion will rise to around 6 million passengers per year.
Orascom Construction, which handled part of the development, announced in its 2024 annual report that the terminal expansion and related infrastructure (apron, taxiways, utilities) were completed, and a two-year maintenance contract has begun.
The renaming reflects a government strategy to modernize the airport, enhance its global identity tied to Alexandria, and support regional growth through improved aviation infrastructure.
