In the heart of Europe this winter, Italy stands poised to host one of the most remarkable editions of the Olympic Winter Games in history. From 6 to 22 February 2026, the world’s best winter athletes will descend upon northern Italy for the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, a celebration of sport, culture, and Italian heritage that promises dramatic competition and unforgettable experiences.
This edition of the Games is unique in its spirit and structure. Rather than being centered in a single location, Milano-Cortina 2026 spreads across two iconic cities — Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo — and a constellation of stunning alpine venues in the surrounding regions. This sprawling approach reflects a new Olympic vision that blends urban vibrancy with mountain majesty, bringing the Games to varied communities and landscapes throughout northern Italy.
Milan, Italy’s cosmopolitan powerhouse known for fashion, design, and culture, will play host to the official Opening Ceremony at the legendary San Siro Olympic Stadium on 6 February. This will mark a historic first: an Olympic flame ignited in one of the world’s most famed football arenas, symbolizing the intersection of sport and cultural spectacle. Milan will also host a suite of indoor competitions, with figure skating, speed skating, short track, and ice hockey taking place in newly developed and rejuvenated venues.
Cortina d’Ampezzo, nestled amid the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites and famously known as the “Queen of the Alps,” returns to Olympic prominence exactly 70 years after hosting the Games in 1956. Here, outdoor winter sport classics such as alpine skiing, curling, and the sliding sports — bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge — will be contested on snow and ice that has challenged champions across generations. But this is not just history repeated: events like ski mountaineering will make their Olympic debut in 2026, adding fresh excitement and expanding the boundaries of winter competition.
Beyond Milan and Cortina, the Games will showcase other cherished Italian alpine towns. In Bormio, men’s alpine ski races and ski mountaineering will challenge elite skiers; Livigno will bring adrenaline to snowboarding and freestyle; while Anterselva/Antholz will host biathlon competitions in a venue revered by winter sport fans. The Nordic world will converge on Val di Fiemme and Predazzo for ski jumping and cross-country racing. The romance of Italy’s cultural heritage will bookend these intense competitions with the Closing Ceremony set in Verona’s ancient Roman amphitheater, a stunning testament to Italy’s depth of history.
The scale of the event will be vast. Nearly 2,900 athletes from around 90 countries are expected to compete in 116 events across 16 sports, showcasing the highest levels of human athletic achievement from ice to snow and from track to downhill. The motto “IT’s Your Vibe” captures the Games’ joyful blend of personal expression and Italian flair, while the mascots — including Tina the white stoat — embody the spirit of playfulness and regional identity.
But these Olympics are about more than medals and mountain views. They are also unfolding against the broader backdrop of global challenges. Climate change, for instance, has loomed large in conversations about the future of winter sport. Scientific studies and reporting have underscored how warming temperatures are reducing natural snow reliability even in historic winter sport destinations like Cortina and Milan, prompting significant use of artificial snow and conversation about long-term sustainability.
Environmental advocacy groups have not hesitated to voice criticism connected to sustainability, especially regarding corporate sponsorships from fossil fuel companies, suggesting that those at the forefront of climate change should perhaps not be highlighted at snow-dependent sporting spectacles.
There are also sociopolitical and operational stories woven into the tapestry of the Games. Debates over security, including discussions around international law enforcement support, have illustrated the complexity of hosting an event of this scale in today’s world. Reports of athlete doping and competition integrity measures, including enhanced anti-match-fixing monitoring by the International Olympic Committee, remind spectators that the fight for fair play remains as vital as ever.
Despite these challenges, the organizing committee and host communities have pressed forward with revitalization efforts, embracing the Olympics as a catalyst for infrastructure upgrades, urban development, and international cultural exchange. The Milan Olympic Village, for instance, has been designed not just as athlete housing during the Games but as a future community hub with student housing, retail spaces, and public gathering places.
As the opening ceremonies draw near and the torch’s symbolic journey has already passed through Athens before heading onward in Italy, the excitement is palpable. For athletes, it is a moment to fulfill lifelong dreams. For spectators, both in person and around the globe, Milano-Cortina 2026 is a chance to witness drama on ice and snow, to marvel at feats of strength and grace, and to connect — through sport — with cultures and stories from every corner of the world.
In these Games, Italy invites the world into its cities and mountains with open arms, confident that this winter’s narrative will echo through sporting history long after the Olympic flame is extinguished.
Important note about private flights:
From 4 to 7 February 2026, airports in the Milan area will be closed to private aviation due to Olympic airspace restrictions. During the entire Games period, landings in Bormio and Livigno will not be permitted. The nearest available helipads outside restricted zones are approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Bormio and one hour’s drive from Livigno. In Cortina d’Ampezzo, the closest helipad outside the no-fly area is located at Hotel Boîte, about a 20-minute drive from the competition zone.
